Bulk updates for Google Business Profile
I built a system that applies updates to many business listings at once, without overloading the Google API.
100sof clients updating their listings in bulk
01Problem
HubLocal clients manage many business locations on Google. Changing the same information across all of them meant editing each one.
Sending all those changes at once would congest the Google Business Profile API.
02Constraints
- Google Business Profile API limits. Updates had to be spread out over time.
- Every change had to be traceable, so clients could see what was applied and what failed.
03What I did
- I designed the flow around request logs: each bulk change becomes a set of logged requests.
- Cron jobs process the logs periodically, sending requests to Google at a pace the API accepts.
- I built the frontend in React so clients could start a bulk update and follow its progress.
04Trade-offs
Periodic processing instead of instant updates. Changes take a little longer to appear, but the API is never flooded.
Storing every request as a log uses more storage, but makes failures easy to find and retry.
05Result
Hundreds of clients saved time when updating their data.
Bulk changes no longer congested the Google Business Profile API.
